SCHOLARSHIPS and STUDENT RECRUITING

Each year, the North Metro Georgia Tech Club continues its fine tradition of scholarship and recruiting activities for local high school students interested in Georgia Tech. There are two types of scholarships our local club works on throughout the year:
  1. Club Scholarships
Part of the North Metro Georgia Tech Club's mission is to assist in providing scholarships to incoming Georgia Tech freshmen. North Metro provides four to six one thousand dollar scholarships each year to incoming Georgia Tech freshmen. Information is provided to the high school counselors in early February for the following school year scholarship program. At that time, after receiving a recommendation from their counselor, each applicant is required to submit an application for the scholarship, obtain a teacher recommendation, submit a one page essay on why they should get the club scholarship, and a list of high school activities with job performances. All students are interviewed by members of the North Metro Club.

Only students from the North Metro area high schools can be considered for these scholarships.
    These high schools are:
FULTON COUNTY- Centennial High, Chattahoochee High, North Springs High, Northview High, Riverwood High, and Roswell High.
    DEKALB COUNTY- Dunwoody High.

  2. Georgia Tech President's Scholarships
The President's Scholarship is Georgia Tech's premier merit-based scholarship and is given using Roll Call dollars through the Alumni Association and the Georgia Tech Foundation. To earn President's Scholarship, a student must excel in both academics and leadership. Georgia Tech seeks well-rounded students with outstanding accomplishments in academics, clubs and activities, athletics, community service, and more.

North Metro assists The Georgia Tech Alumni Association each year in identifying and interviewing incoming freshman candidates for the President's Scholarship Program. A North Metro Club committee, as part of the criteria for becoming a finalist, interviews identified local high school seniors who are selected as President's Scholarship semi-finalists based on their application to Georgia Tech. North Metro is fortunate to be such an integral part of this process and to be able to meet many fine young men and women who are interested in Georgia Tech. To be considered for a President's Scholarship the application to Georgioa Tech must be submittd by October 31. President's Scholarship interviews take place in January.

Notes from the 2007 NMGT Club Scholarship Recipients:

September 9, 2007

Dear North Metro Georgia Tech Alumni Club,

Thank you so much for selecting me to be a recipient of one of this year’s scholarships! Your club has made me feel so welcome at Tech, from my interview to the freshman send-off picnic to today’s ice cream picnic. I’m already having a great time at Tech (especially at yesterday’s 69-14 football game!) and I am excited about keeping in touch with the North Metro Club and the Alumni Association in the future.

Thank you!
Sierra Schmidt

Dear North Metro Club Members,

I am writing to sincerely thank you for the scholarship you have given me. I’ve made it through my first few weeks and I am busy trying to juggle all the school work, the activities I’m joining, and new friends! I’ve joined the OPA service sorority and am so excited to begin giving back to the Georgia Tech and Atlanta community. I hope to keep in touch with you in the future and once again thank you for the support!

Kind Regards,
Jennifer Carrick

A note from the 2006 NMGT Club Scholarship Recipient:

Dear Ms. Polashock,

Hi! My name is Stephanie Lu. I don’t know if you remember me or not, but I’ve really appreciated your help in coordinating the Alumni Scholarship. I just wanted to ask how you are doing and to thank you guys for awarding me the scholarship. It means a lot to have funds for buying those expensive textbooks and for the expensive architecture supplies that I’ve had to buy (studio has cost me upwards of $200). Anyway, I’ve really come to appreciate the value of everything (including home-cooked meals) since I’ve been living at Tech and just wanted to show my gratitude. I hope you are doing well and are not too busy with work. Also, the Alumni Association events in the fall were fun. Thanks for coordinating those, too. I look forward to more events! They’ve helped me to open up and become a little more extroverted. I hope everything is going happily!

A note from 2005 NMGT Club Scholarship Recipient Megan L. Elmore:
I would like to thank you again for awarding me your scholarship. I cannot imagine myself anywhere but here now! I feel that I am quickly becoming a part of the College of Computing “family” – outside of my programming class, I am a member of the CoC Freshman Activities Board and am enjoying the seminars and events that the Women@CC put together. I am also continuing my language studies in my favorite class, Japanese, and am looking forward to traveling to Japan in a few years as a part of the CS International Plan. When I am not studying – which, as a Tech student, is not very often – I am really enjoying singing in the GT Chorale.

As ever I am grateful for your contribution to my education; every day as I continue my studies here I am amazed and enthused by the opportunities Tech has to offer.

HELPING GEORGIA TECH THROUGH THE NORTH METRO CLUB

Make a Donation Online!!
Click here to make a scholarship donation online. It's quick, easy, & completely safe.

North Metro Endowed Scholarship Fund
The North Metro Georgia Tech Club has endowed a $25,000 (and growing) scholarship fund through the Alumni Association and the Georgia Tech Foundation. The North Metro Endowed Scholarship Fund is administered through the Alumni Association and will always be there to provide scholarship money to Tech students. If you would like to donate to the North Metro Endowed Scholarship Fund, please see the "MEMBERSHIP" page referenced on the "Table of Contents" on the left side bar, or print and complete the ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP FUND GIFT FORM and mail as directed.
College Night Fairs
During the fall, Club volunteers attend high school college nights to "spread the good word" about Georgia Tech. We visit several school and district fairs in the North Metro area. Most of the college nights occur within a very short time period. Often several fairs are scheduled on the same day, and our representation is only limited by the number of alumni and friends of Georgia Tech who participate.
The Georgia Tech Alumni Association "Roll Call"
The Roll Call funds scholarships, development, faculty, equipment, programs, and services at Georgia Tech. Your Roll Call contributions earn Alexander-Tharpe points for athletic ticket priority and they help increases the value of your degree. Roll Call contributions help get Georgia Tech into the Top 10 list by U.S. News & World Report. The ranking is based in part on "alumni satisfaction" measured by the percent of alumni who give back to the school.

North Metro is in the "Griffin" league (>900 alumni in area) for Roll Call purposes. Clubs compete against other clubs in their league to attempt to have the "largest percent" of Roll Call contributors based on the number of Georgia Tech alumni in their defined area. The first and second place clubs in each league receive money for their club to use in awarding local students scholarships to Georgia Tech. It is important that all alumni in the North Metro area contribute something, so that the club can be recognized and receive a cash reward. Giving just $10 makes you a contributor, and you will count toward the percent of North Metro alumni giving to the Alumni Association Roll Call.

Each year the North Metro Club participates in a Roll Call Phon-a-thon in an effort to improve the North Metro percentage of alumni giving to the Roll Call. The Phon-a-thon is scheduled as part of a regular North Metro Club Board Meeting and is noted on this Web Site on the "CALENDAR". Volunteers from our club will be calling you to ask for your donation. The amount you give is very important, but the fact that you give anything is enough to help the club attain the percentage to win the league competition. Please think about contributing to the Roll Call each year. This is important to the financial well being of Georgia Tech, and it is important to the North Metro Georgia Tech Club.

If you would like to make a contribution, just make your check to the Georgia Tech Foundation and send it to Roll Call / 190 North Avenue / Atlanta, GA 30313. Remember the deadline each year is June 30th! Roll Call years run July 1st through June 30th. Please do not forget your company's matching gift form, if this applies to you, and make your donation early to be eligible for benefits such as an invitation to the President's Dinner ($1,000 donations in one year).
